How LiveProtest is sourced
Every report on the map is built from published journalism and links back to it. This page shows what we cover, how statuses are decided and how much reporting the map is based on. For the full method, read how we verify.
Protest statistics — activity over time, country rankings, live and upcoming protests, and a CSV download — are on Insights. This page explains how the reporting behind them is gathered and checked. Last update 4 minutes ago (21 Oct 2026, 02:55 UTC).
Coverage
- 134 countries searched in their own languages (about 49 languages), on a rotating schedule every 30 minutes, plus a worldwide feed of geocoded protest events every run.
- Demonstrations of any size are included — a picket of 20 people counts; we never require a crowd figure.
- 264 validated publisher feeds (regional and local newspapers, public broadcasters, trade unions), in addition to news search.
- In the last 7 days, 83,514 news items were screened and 3,306 contained a reportable protest.
- Publishers cited in the last 30 days: 1,483, including 51 established national or wire outlet(s) and 31 regional or local outlet(s).
Status labels
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Live | A credible, corroborated report explicitly said it was under way within the last 6 hours. |
| Possibly ongoing | Recent reporting suggests it may be under way, but this is not yet confirmed (one outlet, indirect wording, or an ageing report). |
| Upcoming | Announced or scheduled for a future date. Announced ≠ confirmed ≠ happening. |
| Postponed | Sources report it was postponed or rescheduled. |
| Recent | Reported in the last 7 days. Not confirmed as still under way. |
| Ended | Reported concluded, or more than 7 days old. |
| Cancelled | Sources report it was cancelled, banned or called off. |
| Unverified | Single-source, conflicting, or a scheduled protest no report confirms took place. |
Verification rules
- Every fact (place, date, cause, demands, crowd figures, official responses, organisers) must be supported by a verbatim quote that we check against the article. Unsupported facts are discarded.
- Live needs a quoted statement that the demonstration is under way, observed within the last 6 hours, and corroboration: two independent outlets saying so, a wire agency, or one verified report on an event confirmed by other outlets. Possibly ongoing means recent reporting suggests activity but confirmation is insufficient (one outlet, indirect wording, or a report older than 6 hours and under 12 with no end reported). Recent means it was reported but nothing recent says it is still under way. A recent article alone never makes an event live.
- Evidence is dated by when the source observed it — a live-blog entry's own timestamp or a stated time, otherwise publication time, never the time we found it. Events that may be under way are re-checked every 5–10 minutes; live blogs are followed entry by entry.
- A “live” coverage label is not evidence that people are on the ground; nor is footage of unknown date. Old articles re-surfaced with a fresh date, and wire stories syndicated by several outlets (counted once), cannot make an event live. Community posts can suggest activity but never confirm it.
- Announced protests are shown as upcoming (announced or confirmed) and are never shown as happening until a report says they took place.
- Crowd estimates are shown per source with who made them; we never average competing figures.
- Reports in different languages about the same demonstration are merged; confidence rises with independent sources and falls when sources conflict.
- Locations are published at city level only; we never show undisclosed meeting points or identify individual participants.
- Summaries are AI-assisted, written only from the quote-checked facts, and every sentence cites its sources.
