What protests were about
Main topic of corroborated and single-source reports, last 7 days.
How to read these numbers
- Reported protest
- A demonstration, rally, march, strike action with a gathering, picket, sit-in, blockade or vigil of any size, reported by at least one news source we monitor and placed at a city, region or (for nationwide actions) country. Reports of the same demonstration in different outlets and languages are merged into one.
- Corroborated
- Reported by at least two independent outlets — wire stories republished by several outlets count once — or by a wire agency.
- Single source
- Reported by one outlet so far. Shown separately; it may be corroborated later.
- Unverified
- Weak or conflicting sourcing, missing details, or an announced protest that no report confirms took place. Never added to confirmed figures.
- Live
- A credible report observed within the last 6 hours explicitly says the demonstration is under way, confirmed independently. Live-coverage labels and footage alone do not count.
- Possibly ongoing
- Recent reporting suggests activity, but confirmation is insufficient (one outlet, indirect wording, or a report older than 6 hours with no end reported).
- Upcoming · Recent · Ended · Cancelled
- Announced or scheduled (announced is not confirmed, and not happening) · reported in the last 7 days, not confirmed as still under way · reported concluded, or older · reported called off or banned.
- Event time
- The start time stated in the sources, otherwise the time it was first reported. Charts use UTC.
Data sources
News search in each country's own languages (134 countries, about 49 languages), the GDELT event and article databases, validated publisher feeds (regional and national newspapers, public broadcasters, trade unions, public authorities), live blogs followed entry by entry, and — where enabled — community posts through official APIs, which never confirm anything on their own. Every fact is checked against a verbatim quote from its source. Full methodology · Transparency.
Coverage limits
- These figures are not the number of protests in the world. They count protests that appeared in the news sources we monitor and passed our checks.
- Coverage is uneven: countries with more local media, press freedom and languages we search are better represented. A higher count can mean more coverage, not more protest.
- Small, rural and unreported demonstrations are under-counted. Countries are searched on a rotating schedule, so very recent events may appear with a delay.
- Figures change as reports are corroborated, merged or corrected; download the CSV with its date for a fixed snapshot.
